WHAT IS ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY?

What is Orthognathic Surgery?

It is that surgical intervention that has the purpose of correcting those alterations or deformities ''dento-cranio-maxillofacial'', in order to obtain a perfect balance in the facial characteristics of the person.

There are different types of this surgery as such. To define which one is going to require your intervention, a three-dimensional X-ray study is needed to identify the affected area.

Types of Orthognathic Surgery

Jaw surgery: This consists of placing the jaw in the correct position, in order to achieve facial harmony, and also to recover mobility to be able to chew, breathe and speak. The process lasts approximately 40 minutes in the operating room.
Jaw surgery: This procedure is performed when patients have a small jaw, as well as conditions in the lower part of the face. It lasts about 30 minutes in the operating room.
Maxillomandibular surgery: This type of surgery serves to restructure facial asymmetry, in addition to positioning the jaw. The procedure lasts between 90 and 120 minutes.

What is the purpose of this procedure?

Mainly to improve the function of the jaw and stabilize the aesthetics of the face. In this case, when orthodontics is not enough to solve the patient's problems, it is necessary to perform this surgery.

Care and recommendations:

Once the operation is completed, the patient must rest for 10 to 15 days.
During the first month, the patient has to continue with a soft diet (consumption of cooked vegetables, white meats. Avoid excess fiber and fats).
